Scam Description
Subject identified himself as James from Discover Card Executive Offices. [No last name given]. Claimed they were doing a ‘random identity check’ and sent me a request for 2 years’ tax returns to verify my identity. They demanded the form be returned within 5 days. I never got the form so they sent it again. The form request had no logo on it and came from an Adobe address. I called the number on the card and spoke with a rep, who verified my identity. I said, OK great, you agree I am who I say I am, unlock the account. They refused and referred me to Security. When challenged, Discover closed my account. I thought they were doing so to protect my identity and issue a new card. Nope. They said they were closing it due to non-response to the form sent. I patiently tried to explain to ‘James’ the silliness of their request and how much it smelled like a scam. Who needs 2 years of tax returns to verify an identity? Someone needs to lose their job and Discover needs to smarten up.
