Scam Description
We contacted Chris about purchasing a 2000 Jeep Wrangler via Facebook Marketplace. Over a period of time he dropped the price several times and we chose to go look at this vehicle. He again dropped the price to $5,000 + fees coming to $5517. with the understanding that he would have exhaust work done and that the vehicle would pass inspection. We picked the vehicle up the following week. The new inspection sticker was not on the Jeep, but it did have an in date sticker. A week later we took our son’s new Jeep to our mechanic to get the oil changed, and change the steering assembly prior to inspection. When our mechanic put it on the lift he was horrified. He called us immediately saying that it would never pass inspection due to rust on the frame. He sent us to a Jeep specialist. Tomyworx, the Jeep frame specialist, stated that there was now way that they could repair or replace the frame. Also, they felt that the existing inspection sticker was questionable. They found that the frame had been taped then painted black over the tape “in an intentional attempt to deceive.”
After 3 weeks of repeatedly texting with this dealer, who originally claimed to “own” the dealership, but now conveniently does not, we have reached a settlement. Chris agreed to meet us and give us $5,000 in cash, because “the boss is never around” to give us the entire amount. That leaves us short approximately $1800 between work we had done and fees, but at least we aren’t completely out of all of it…. except, we get there and he hands me a BUSINESS CHECK! NO CASH!! Now I am waiting a week and a half to see if the thing clears.
In the mean time I am looking on Marketplace again this morning, starting the search again for my son’s car, what do I see but that death trap of a Jeep. M&M Motors has it back up for sale $7,495. It is going to get someone killed! I have been driving manual transmission cars for 27 years. An inexperienced driver WILL NOT stay on the road over 60 mph.
