Scam Description

I initially got an email that I have a $1699 payment request from the Apple Store.
I then opened my PayPal app (not through any link in the email).
I indeed did have a payment request. However there there two things showing it was a scam.
First the request actually showed the name of the account was “Susan Van Scoy”
Then the request had a “Sellers Note” that said:
“SELLER NOTE TO CUSTOMER” Your checking account on file will be charged automatically with $1,699.00 on October 06, 2022. If you don’t recognize this charge please call PayPal Fraud Department at 1-888-920-5004”
This shows the scam well where people would panic and call this number not realizing it comes from the seller.
I was curious, and angry, so I called the number. It’s a very legit sounding automated call where they have menu options and #4 is for the fraud department. I’m sure all numbers go to the same person.
They answer quickly which is the last sign it’s not legit. Generally, fraud departments are a good 5-30 minute wait.
I then, in a not so polite way, let them know where they could stick their scam.
