Scam Description
First I received an email in response to a Remote Data Entry Clerk position I had applied for on Indeed. I gave brief description of the job and told me the next steps were to download Google Chats and add the email Viviana@whitcombgeneralcontracting.com to it and send a message stating it was for a Job Interview. I did as I was instructed thinking it was for a video chat, since that is how a lot of companies will do it these days. Instead it was all through text messages in the app and it all seemed pre determined, not really mattering what I was responding with. I had minimal questions asked about my actual qualifications for the position and by the end was told I had the job. At first I was excited because the position pays more than I make now and I would get to work from home, but I quickly got more suspicious once she asked for my name, address, sex and phone number. 3 of those pieces of information were not only on the application I submitted already but the resume I had also sent and my sex wouldn’t matter until the hiring process was being completed. She said she wanted this information so they could send the check for the supplies I would need to purchase such as a MacBook, file cabinet and quite a few few different programs needed for the position. She wanted to send a check before even having me listed as an employee for the company telling me later in the process I would be set up with the supervisor and the enrollment process would take place. I asked if she had a company portal everything could go through and she insisted everything was done on Google Chats and it was secure. By the end of the conversation I informed her I didn’t feel comfortable with their process and that I was unable to find any information on their company except for the web link she sent me through the conversation and that I didn’t feel comfortable continuing with the position.
