Scam Description
I’ve been getting calls since 12.28.23 from “Freedom Debt Relief”. The first caller, a woman, said she was with Chase Bank, and someone from NY was trying to use my credit card for $239, and they had declined it. I asked her what I should do, and she said they aren’t trying to get my credit card, but they have my Social Security number and all of my credit cards. She transferred me to a man who said he was with “Freedom Debt Relief”, and he told me it was illegal to charge seniors over 8.2% credit card interest, and read me a case number and an Act. I wrote everything down. He knew everything. I called my bank, and they said they would never call me, and advised me to put an alert on my Experian credit report, which I did. Last night, I got a call from a man pretending to be LL Bean, saying he had received a cease and desist letter, and they weren’t allowed to charge me the 17% interest rate any more as two different Federal Acts had been passed saying seniors could no longer be paid more than 8.2%. He told me I was getting rude with them. He wanted me to cancel three of my credit cards. He knew the balances, and how much I’d been paying. They all have middle Eastern accents, but have names like David Parker and Brian Davis.
