Scam Description

I received a banner notification on my iPhone regarding a PayPal charge of $339 for Google Play. To the best of my knowledge, we do not use Google Play at all. Somehow, I got a number to call and hung up before anyone answered. Then my cell phone rang shortly thereafter saying “This is PayPal, we saw that you attempted to call us.” I explained the situation and they said to me “Well, someone must have compromised your account. You should change your password and we have to go through this process to make sure no other charges are on there.” I had to run to a meeting and asked for a number so I could call them back. See above reference Scammer Phone.
When we spoke again, they asked me to open Google Chrome and type in “Anydesk.com”. Then he asked me to click the “Download Now” button, which I did. But immediately thought Red Flag, Red Flag. So I said “I am not going to give you access to my account before I know that you are truly with PayPal.” He started to argue with me saying he wasn’t going to remove my access. That’s not what I said. So I pushed back, finally saying “OK, this call is done. I am going to hang up now.” and the guy hung up on me. Then it dawned on me, when I returned the phone calls, it was to a cell phone and not a central phone system. Another red flag.
