Scam Description:
Is this a scam deposit amount? My wife and want to have a multiple bathroom remodel project done (~$65k), but since the house is a Summer rental we will not be able to clear the calendar for the renovation until Jan/Feb of 2025. The contractor will not be ordering any materials until probably Oct, but we were originally asking for a 50% deposit. I expressed my discomfort with that, and they came back with a 25% deposit. I still don’t want to have $1 5k just sitting in their bank account (if indeed that is where it would be) until making the rest of the deposit in Oct so they can order materials. I really just want to hold that spot in their calendar so that I get it done in Jan/Feb. My question is: what is a reasonable deposit for them to ask for because the deposit is nonrefundable and 50% seems like a scam.
