Scam Description

This was a scam that came across my computer screen. It was a pop up that said your computer has been infected and this voice came on that said to call this number 1-877-312-4079 to remove the virus. My computer was frozen. I could not X out of the screen at all. I was freaked out and called the number on the screen. I spoke to a person that said they could help me. I let this person log into my computer and he removed the voice on the screen that kept stating over and over “You will need to call the number on this screen to have the virus removed”. They did not ask me for credit card number or social security numbers. They removed the virus (supposedly?) which was a trojan and showed me where the virus was on the computer. Then asked if I wanted to have the service for a year that would include updates and scans done once a month on my computer to keep it updated and virus free. The cost was $300.00 for a year or $500.00 for 3 years.
I told them I could not afford this and they proceeded to tell me how they helped me. Told me if I do not take the service they would put my computer back the way it was with the virus on it. This is when I should off closed my computer and hung up on them. I was scammed and wrote a check for $300.00 for the services. They had me take picture of check and send to my email. They cashed it. I went to my bank and had accounts changed including all of my log in passwords on my computer. I am ashamed to tell this story that it happened to me. Found out from my security company that all I had to do was hit “control, alt and delete” and that would of removed the screen shouting I had an infected computer or call them to remove the virus. I feel so stupid and victimized after this experience but I know for next time. I learned an expensive lesson.
