Scam Description
I was offered a remote online position as a data entry clerk through my email. It told me to message someone named Shawn Cumiskey for an interview through Microsoft teams. I was interviewed via teams strictly through him messaging me questions. Once I completed the interview, I got a job offer. Someone else named George lawthom(lawthomhiringdesk@gmail.com emailed me an offer letter, I-9, and W-4 paperwork to complete. I provided my personal information and SSN. Shawn stated he would send me a check to my home for office supplies and $100 for a start up bonus. The check was sent, and I deposited it, but the next day my bank put a hold on it which never happens. I messaged Shawn to tell him, and he said he would contact his accounting dept. I then called my bank to find out what was going on. They stated that the check was fake and my personal information could be compromised.
