Scam Description
I first got a phone from a “locator” saying she was calling to notify me of an upcoming court date as somone is suing me. She could not tell me what it was for, but she gave me a phone number and a case number for “Mercury Law,” the company supposedly suing me.
I called Mercury Law, where they explained to me that they were trying to collect on a debt from 14 years ago from a store credit card opened in my name.
This threw me off because 14 years ago there WAS infact a card opened in my name after i had lost my wallet with all my forms of ID. I did dispute the charges on this card and made sure the card was closed. It originally had around $80 charged to it.
These people seem to have been able to find record that had some truth to it regarding my name, the last 4 of my social, and the fact that 14 years ago there was a dispute over this debt.
They tried to tell me after 14 years of interest now on the initial charge, that theyre suing for $3000.00. They said no court date has been set but if i did’t pay the $3000 over the phone with a visa card today, that i would have to pay it tbrough the court system where even more fees would be added on.
I asked for some kind of documentation to be emailed to me showing the allegations, the account history, or whatever they could show me to prove this was not a scam.
He said he would email me that immediately after we hung up and that i would have 24 hrs to call back with payment.
He never sent an email.
He told me his name was Gregg Jeffries.
