Scam Description
I received a text that said I owed $ 4.95 in unpaid tolls and to avoid a 95 dollar charge I should pay it. without thinking I paid the toll clicking on the link in the text it briefly took me to a reputable looking site for NY State tolls, I put in my bank account information and paid the bill. I hadn’t thought about it again until yesterday when a charge of 1358.64 became charged to my bank account by my debit card I called the bank right away and told them I had not purchased anything on 9/11/24 at 1:57pm and definitely did not know of any company called ECOTRIC. I found out about this charge because My bank M&T sent me a text telling me this amount was approved. Confused I called them right away. the number in the text for the ECOTRIC company is 5107566677 which i called as well and it is a “not in service” number.
I did not know about the Toll scam until this has happened. I am besides myself since this took over half of my pay and has devastated me. I am looking now through my bank statement the 4.95 charge does not show, and the text has disappeared from my phone I am not sure how, or If I had deleted it thinking I had paid it so it should be done. the toll text happened between 8/30/24 and 9/3/24
what do I do now?
