Scam Description
I received a phone message on my mobile phone, it read (grammar / misspelling is verbatim from my voicemail transcript), “Hello please listen to this important voicemail. This is an important message from the student loan center located in North Carolina our records indicate you are eligible for a $10,000 removal on your account. This applies to all loans statuses including loans that are in default and garnishment. The enrollment period is now open. Please give our North Carolina office a call at 919-891-2037 again that number is 919-891-2037. Thank you.”
I called back and the person sounded like they were in a room with a few other operators (similar conversations in background). He stated that I was eligible for the new student forgiveness program, asked me some basic questions: was I single or married, was I employed (by non-profit, gov’t agency or private company, my email address, etc. When he wanted more personal information, I asked if there was a website I could use instead… and was told that there was no website at this time. I then revealed that I knew he was attempting to scam me and he hung up. I called back a couple more times and different people answered the call but all used the same script to try to engage in conversation and gather data.
