BigBasket’s move to enter into offline retail to widen its customer base in India, says GlobalData
Tata Group-owned BigBasket, an online grocery platform, forayed into offline retail to expand its retail footprint in India. With this move, the company aims to bridge the gap between the offline and online experiences, as well as support its ambitious expansion plans amid rising competition in the grocery retail space. This move comes at a time when consumers in India continue to opt for offline stores for their grocery needs and will allow the digital-first retailer to expand its customer base in the country, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
UK: Tesco and M&S see sales soar over Christmas
Tesco and Marks & Spencer both saw strong trading over Christmas as higher prices boosted their sales. Tesco said like-for-like sales at its UK stores rose by 5.3% while M&S’s grew by 7.2%. The UK’s largest supermarket said there had been strong demand for its budget items though shoppers had also been treating themselves to Tesco’s Finest range. Meanwhile, M&S said it had performed well across food, clothing and home. While Tesco reported a rise in sales for the 19 weeks to 7 January, growth was driven by the pace of rising prices – or inflation – rather than people buying more items. Marks & Spencer saw a 6.3% rise in like-for-like sales across its food halls in the 13 weeks to 31 December, seeing record Christmas sales of more than £80mln on 23 December.

Italy’s D.IT Cooperative posts 3% growth in FY 2022
Italian retail cooperative and purchasing group D.IT – Distribuzione Italiana has closed its financial year 2022 with a 3% increase in turnover, which it says exceeded initial forecasts. The group’s private-label arm saw growth of approximately 20%. D.IT’s operations include the Sigma and Sisa retail chains and brands, such as Gusto & Passione, VerdeMio and Equilibrio & Piacere. D.IT noted that even its entry-level brand, Primo, has responded positively to increased consumer demand for convenience.
UK: Higgidy becomes first non-vegan brand to sponsor Veganuary
Fresh food manufacturer Higgidy has become the first ever non-vegan brand to sponsor Veganuary. The collaboration comes as Higgidy looks to showcase its growing plant-based portfolio as over 75% of its pies, quiches, rolls and muffins are vegetarian or vegan.

India: Bigbasket goes omnichannel, opens supermart in Hyderabad
Bigbasket, an online grocery supermarket chain, has launched its first full-fledged supermarket in Hyderabad. This large format brick-and-mortar store is spread across 5000 sq ft and stocks about 4,000 SKUs of fruits and vegetable products as well as dry groceries. “This is not a normal supermarket as there will be no tellers to do the billing, technology will enable self-billing by customers”, said V S Sudhakar, one of the co-founders of Bigbasket while inaugurating the store.

Pukpip is launching a range of new frozen fruit with frozen bananas dipped in a choice of milk, dark and white chocolate. New for 2023, Pukpip is set to transform the ice cream category by tapping into the rise of indulgent frozen snacking and desserts.
